Orienteering IIa is a class is for hikers, backpackers and other general recreationists with a basic understanding of map reading and the compass. It has also proved suitable for special purpose training as for scout and back-country leaders and search and rescue personnel. This course has been approved for CARDA certification. It will consist of a brief review of basic techniques, a discussion of what will be covered during the day followed by a 3-4 mile hike. Subject matter will include an introduction to contour interpretation, identification of major land features, taking and following bearings, triangulation and other intermediate and advanced techniques. The emphasis will be on increasing proficiency and confidence. The class will be limited to twelve students to facilitate personalized attention.
