An introduction to land navigation through the sport of orienteering. Learn what is really important to finding your way in the wilderness. How important is the map?...the compass? Are you interested in the sport of orienteering? After a brief introduction, the instructor will lead a hands-on demonstration around an orienteering course. Interested in map and compass for your backpacking and hiking route finding? You will learn the techniques used by orienteers to find your way through unknown terrain with skill and confidence. The introduction includes a brief description of the sport, the elements of the map and the essentials of navigating safely and efficiently.  Orienteering I teaches the fundamentals of map reading.  Orienteering IIa is a continuation introducing contour interpretation and compass techniques.  The term "orienteering" is sometimes used loosely. This is the real thing.

Orienteering I is offered periodically as the demand dictates. Space is limited. Advance payment is required. Dates will be confirmed once four payments have been received.  Refunds or credit will be available if the minimum is not reached. No-shows may attend a subsequent class at no charge.
